New York Enterprise Search User Group – Beyond the 10 Blue Links

A search box; a search button; and ten blue links – what could possibly be missing from this equation? With the volume of information within enterprises growing exponentially, it is also becoming harder to sift through the noise to find needed information. Enterprise search is a critical tool for retrieving and uncovering relevant content. But when search results don’t return the desired content, frustrated users are driven to try out yet another search engine; continuously repeating the same cycle, also known as The Enterprise Search Cycle.

BA Insight’s Principal Search Architect, Mike Himelstein, recently explored the enterprise search cycle and the drivers behind successful search. Why is search broken? What are the steps organizations can take to eliminate the cycle of broken search? Using Tabs in the Enterprise Search Center in SharePoint Server 2010

When I give search presentations, one of the demos I always do is about showing users how to do some quick and easy customizations to the Enterprise Search Center to improve the search experience a little better.

Just a quick note before we get into things too deeply. This blog post is specifically for users with SharePoint Server 2010 or Search Server Express 2010.  If you happen to have FAST Search for SharePoint (FS4SP) the process for creating scopes will be different, but the same concepts would apply.  In fact, you’ll be able to create scopes if you FS4SP the way I describe but you might get incorrect results.

SharePoint 2010 Search New Query Syntax: Wildcards and Boolean Operators

One of the most common complaints about SharePoint search in MOSS 2007 was the inability to use Wildcards and Boolean Operators when performing search queries.  Both of these capabilities were supported by the search API but required either custom code or 3rd Party Search Utilities to take advantage of this. 

The good news is that SharePoint 2010 now supports both Wildcards and Boolean Operators when performing search queries!  What does this mean?
